From Colorado Highway 72 at Ward, turn west onto the Brainard Lake Road. Travel 2.5 miles to the Brainard Gateway Trailhead, and continue another two miles to Brainard Lake. The entrance station is open seasonally. Look for the photographers along the side of the road!
This area (Brainard Lake) is locally know as the place to view and photograph moose. They are active there, especially in the morning. Although I was hoping to capture one or more in and around the lake area, I came across this bull moose in the scrub brush with two others. If you have ever watched moose in the wild, they are typically head down eating voraciously, and move along while eating. I was lucky that this one actually stopped and stepped out of the brush right in front of me. He even stood very still for a moment or two! Moose are very majestic to see, and the adults are very large, especially when you get as close as I was. It was a fantastic opportunity for me to experience and photograph.
