Description

American Bittern (Botaurus lentiginosus) • A happened glance out the kitchen window caused a double-take. An odd elongated shape was on the neighbor's roof. After living in this house for a year and a half, I had never seen this bird before. Standing on the peak of a first story roof, this bittern was stretching itself straight up—almost looking like something had pierced the roof. • Over the next few days, this funny-looking bird chose to spend it's afternoons sitting outside my kitchen window on the fence between houses. I'm not really into "birding," but I'm guessing that this guy was still molting, due to the fine feather at the top of its head.
