Description

The original chicken dance at dawn by the Greater Prairie-Chicken male is a rare treat to witness. During breeding season, the male bows low to the ground and inflates its neck sacs and booms. He stamps his feet and raises the long feathers behind his head which resembles an ornate headdress.Tail is fanned and prominently raised and he rapidly stamps his feet all the while. This elaborate dance is his attempt to attract a mate to his patch of grass on the lek (courtship grounds). Displays can go on from well before dawn until shortly after sunrise and again near sunset. The dancers really ramp up their enthusiasm when the hens appear. Booming grounds are protected to help ensure successful breeding of this unique species. Taken in Buena Vista Grasslands near Kellner, Wisconsin.
