Description

Four-day-old Common Loon chick, Gavia immer, dreams away this beautiful summer morning atop its mother's back. Baby loons will use their parents' back as a warm safe platform to rest and sleep. Loons carry their young on their backs during early stage of life to protect them from predators that lurk below the water's surface: muskie, snapping turtles, river otters are some of the many predators that could make a quick meal of this fragile little life. While this scene is serene and peaceful, adult loons are on constant vigil for dangers from below and above.
