Description

Large, bright yellow eyes fixed and head cocked, this Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) stands motionless but poised to strike at fish hiding at the base of the marsh plants on a channel between two lakes. The white stripe on the top of its head indicate that this is an adult Great Blue Heron (juveniles have a solid blue crest). They can stand statue-like and move very slowly while stalking prey but have lightning speed when striking.
