The color-splashed hummocks and hills of Bentonite are the eroded remnants of the John Day Formation. The weathering of volcanic ash under varying climatic regimes resulted in vividly-hued layers of red, pink, bronze, tan and black. The colors are intensified when the landscape is wet and the light is soft—the Hills literally glow.
