We had slogged through snow and rain over a mountain pass in the Tien Shan Mountains the previous day, then set up camp in a narrow valley for the night. During the night new snow blanketed the valley floor. When we emerged from our tent the next morning, the clouds still shrouded the upper walls of the valley. Although shot in color, the white clouds, new snow and dark trees and rocks made for an almost black and white image. The clouds that partially obscured the background mountain wall also helped add depth and mystery to this image.
