Description

1/2000th sec. @ f6.3, ISO 800, 280mm, (420mm equiv). Hubbard Glacier calving, August 2012. Unfortunately I had nothing recognizable to put in the foreground that would show the massive scale of this glacier. At the face it reaches heights of up to 350 feet above the waterline! I would estimate that this area of the face was nearly 300 feet high. The sound produced when the ice breaks loose was remarkably loud. It sounded like a combination of a giant tree cracking along with a large cannon being fired at the same time. Scientists estimate it takes ice about 400 years to traverse the entire 76 mile length of this glacier.
