I awoke early with hopes that clouds from an approaching cold front would make for a good sunrise and headed for Steamboat Rock, a local landmark in the Bighorn Mountains off highway 14 above Dayton, Wyoming. A slim gap between clouds and horizon promised potential sunlight underneath clouds. With barely enough time to set up as the sky began to glow orange, pink, red and many shades of purple, I mounted my 5D Mark III on a tripod and began composing images using live view. Within minutes of starting shooting, I added both 2 & 3 stop graduated ND filters to my setup, holding back the sky. I managed approximately 10 minutes of images, including this gem, all the while struggling to stay focused on captured the sight instead of just gawking at the amazing colors and clouds. Once back home, the images on the computer screen confirmed that it had not been just a dream!!
