I came across the bear and her cubs in Cades Cove in the Smoky Mountains National Park. I was out early, and had already seen a bear or two, but nothing I could really photograph. So, I was pretty happy to stumble upon this little group. When I arrived, the sow, (henceforth “Momma Bearâ€) was crossing the street. The cubs were safely up a nearby tree and she was busy feeding out in the field. Of course, when bears feed it’s tough to get a shot. They aren’t posing and you can wait 10 or 15 minutes between VERY fleeting opportunities. Fortunately, I had my eye to the viewfinder when Momma Bear decided to look around. I quickly popped off as many shots as I could at 10 frames a second, hoping to get something cool. Little did I know at the time that she had – very briefly – opened her mouth! (The camera blacks out during the actual exposure, and at 10FPS it’s sometimes hard to know for sure what you have). It was only open for 2 of 10 frames that second, but I LOVE the look!
