Description

All I can say is it pays to get up early – and do some scouting in advance! The day before this was taken, I had stumbled around this area for hours – searching for just the right looking polygons. I found this area about a mile out, and marked it on my GPS. Fast forward to the next morning and I’m hiking out over the Badwater salt flats in Death Valley – GPS in one hand, flashlight in the other. I arrive in the location and wait for sunrise. It was actually a bit chilly at first, but after a mile or so of tripping over salt mounds, I was feeling pretty warm. So, I’m concentrating on the area to the side of this scene and I happen to look over – WOW – what a sky! I quickly reposition my tripod and grabbed this photo – one of my all time favs of Death Valley. It’s funny, had I not looked over to the side, I would have missed this altogether.
