While Autumn and winter are the ideal times to visit arches national park, I found a scene in the early summer that yielded great photo opportunities. As we arrived at delicate arch early in the day, heavy winds and frequent rain had us weary of any good fortune for a shot. We had waited for hours until the massive cloud had a break for the sun to filter through. At this particular moment, the sun had illuminated only the arch itself leaving the cliffs behind in silhouette and making the La Sal mountain range barely visible. Adding the portion of blue sky added a nice contrast to the red rocks of the arch. I named this image American arch because of the red rock, blue sky, and partial white clouds, the colors of the American flag.
