Grand Canyon Winter Sunrise

Equipment Info

I love the Grand Canyon. No, wait, I actually kind of hate it. Wait, wait, no I love it. Although on the other hand… Yeah, in case you haven’t figured it out just yet, I truly do have a love / hate relationship with this place. I LOVE to look over the edge. I love the way it takes your breath away every time you see it. I love how rugged it looks. I love the sheer and utter vastness of it all. But man, it’s a TOUGH subject to photograph! I kid you not – I literally have gigabytes of failed attempts at this place in my files. For every keeper I get, there are probably another dozen or so sunrises / sunsets that don’t produce the results I want. However, sometimes the ‘ol GC gives you a little kiss on the lens :) This particular morning was one of those moments. I was setup at an overlook with my shot composed, just waiting on sunrise. The area was surprisingly devoid of people. I suppose it had something to do with the 18 degree temps and blustery wind. Several groups of people were ill prepared for the chill and didn’t even make it to sunrise. (Most folks think it’s warm all year – there was even a teenage girl shivering in SHORTS!) However, those of us who held our ground (and were wearing our parkas) were treated to this scene – pretty “Grand” in my opinion. As usual, the photo pales by comparison, but man, what a way to start your day!
