This cluster of quartz easily fits in the palm of my hand. I picked it up at a local rock and mineral show. I set up my Canon EOS 5D Mark II on a Vanguard tripod, mounted the 100mm macro lens, and shot 12 consecutive photos, adjusting the focus each time, until I had covered the entire cluster. I used Helicon Focus to stack the 12 images, and I was impressed at the clarity. I then put the composite photo through Topaz Labs Adjust 4, and really liked the color applied by one of the presets. Natural lighting - I set the cluster on a small table in front of my bedroom window. Lesson learned? Use canned air to clean the specimen first!! I had to re-shoot, because of the amount of dust and fibers trapped by the crystals.
