During a recent trip to the Big Island of Hawaii I was lucky enough to get out to the lava flow. After a 2 mile hike out, walking over the old, hardened lava, I came upon the lava tube. After a brief stop at the surface flow, where the lava had bubbled out and was creeping down on the surface, I made my way to the ocean entry. I had to stay far back and use a telephoto lens to photograph it. I knew I wanted to include water motion and kept the photo to 1/4 to 1/2 second exposures.
