First Light On El Capitan Meadow

Description

This picture, for me, was a lesson in the value of getting to know a place intimately. We were scouting for things to shoot very early one morning in Yosemite valley, and noticed a fine mist just beginning to form in El Capitan Meadow--but the meadow itself was still in deep shadow, as the sun hadn't yet cleared the granite walls of the valley. I knew it would be about 30 more minutes before light touched the meadow, so I wandered down the Merced River to shoot other things, with plans to come back to the spot as the "real" sunrise drew closer. When I returned, I had about five minutes to set up my tripod when the low, angled light of the morning sun lit up the trees on the far side of the meadow, and the mist along with it.
