Monsoon Sunset, Eastern Sierra

State/Province/Region
CA
Country
US
Town
Lone Pine
Description

I left work in Los Angeles early on this day to shoot sunset in the Alabama Hills. I knew there was a good chance of monsoon activity, which could mean a dramatic sunset sky. I got a bit more than I bargained for, as I arrived in the midst of a violent storm that closed down the Whitney Portal and Mount Whitney Trail, and watched as the SAR helicopter zoomed past overhead to rescue stranded hikers. As the storm began to clear just as the sun slipped behind the sierra crest, the sky exploded in a range of colors unlike anything I've ever witnessed before or since.
