Brief Directions

Drive south from downtown Ouray on Main Street, which is US Hwy 550. At the south end of town, the road turns sharply right (west). After a couple hundred yards, it turns left until you’re pointed east. That’s where you make the turn to the right where you see a sign for Yankee Boy Basin-Ouray County 361. Once you get to Camp Bird (a rather huge old mining operation), bear right onto Ouray County Road 26. You will continue traveling on the graded road until you get to the lower basin. Once you've reached the restroom, you must have 4 wheel drive to continue to upper basin.

Notes

Remember, you need a sturdy 4 wheel drive vehicle (long-bed truck NOT recommended) in order to get above timberline.

Description

My heaven on earth...Mt. Sneffels wilderness. Yankee Boy Basin is famous for its incredible wildflower displays (especially in mid-July). The basin ranges in altitude from about 11,500 to 12,400 feet. This photo was taken in the upper basin (from above timberline), looking down upon the flowers, the last stand of trees and an alpine stream.
