From Maggie Valley follow signs to Cataloochee. Once you start up the mountain the road will turn to gravel/dirt and once over the mountain it will become paved again. This on the left of the road past the pull off for the overlook on your right heading into Cataloochee Valley and the gates to the actual valley. NOTE: Cataloochee is one way in and out with the exception of a 10 mile 4-wheel road that is quite rugged to Cosby, TN.
Having missed the elk rut in Cataloochee Valley, NC, and after several rainy days during our early fall trip to the Smokies, I was pretty bummed when on the road leaving the valley up the mountain to head back to town we hit a dense, hard fog... Sulking out the window I saw a faint trickle of a runoff stream back in the forest. Making my friend pull over the car and wait for about 40 minutes, I tripod-bushwacked my way through soggy moss covered deadfall and aforementioned stream to find this little fall tucked away. Two clicks of the shutter after this and it was pitch dark.
