I took this while on a small wildlife watching boat just outside of Sitka Harbor. I was all prepared with my 100-400mm lens to shoot mainly Humpback whales and sea otters, but as we rounded this small rock I noticed this bald eagle sitting on top, and I was able to get a few shots of it perched there. I was shooting with As we came around further, it suddenly turned and flew off in the direction which perfectly lined the eagle up nicely with the mountains and fog in the background. I was only able to capture this shot because I had already been shooting him as he just sat there. If I would have waited until he flew off to start shooting, I would not have had enough time to raise the long lens, compose, and focus. Eventually we did get to see some Humpbacks and Sea Otters, but this is the only real keeper from that outing. It pays to always keep your eyes open.
