Description

Every now and then it happens. You get a good snowfall before the water freezes. It doesn’t happen every year – heck sometimes it’s two or three years between windows, but WOW – when it hits, it’s sweeeeeeeetttt! This photo was taken in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula once such winter. It was the first good snowfall of the year and we managed to arrange a trip in about, oh, a day or so. Our “home base” for the trip was Munising, MI – and Sable Falls was about 40 miles away on the other side of the park. Normally not a big deal, but the park roads weren’t cleared and the snow was 10″ – 15″ deep. Fortunately, my truck was equipped for just such an adventure and we plowed our way through, creating the only set of tire tracks on the road in the process. Once we arrived, it was a quite, solitary hike through the hushed forest. As we hiked towards the falls we could hear them whisper through the woods, but as we drew closer that whisper transformed into a roar – and we found ourselves at the top of the staircase leading to the viewing deck. Of course, not content with the viewing deck, we jumped the rail and headed down to the the base of the falls. I played with a number of compositions, but this was by far my favorite. (Glad my boots are of the waterproof variety!)
