“This last Summer, on July 24th my son, Colby and I were hiking around the Desolation Wilderness in the high Sierra Mountains located in Northern California. We hiked to the “Lake of the Woods” lake where we set up camp for the night. After dinner, I took off for a short hike, about 1/2 mile to this tree I had scouted out earlier in the evening. The night sky was dotted with small, fast moving clouds that were illuminated by a nearly full moon. I spent an hour or two trying to find that perfect composition.

“After reviewing the images on the camera’s LCD screen I came to the realization that I could not determine the size of this massive and impressive tree. So, I went back to camp and woke my son who was exhausted from the long hike at altitude. I was able to convince him to come along with me to see this awesome tree and climb up the back side of this rock. I had him stand as close to the edge as he dared, (Colby has always been my little willing photographic sidekick). I then triggered the 25 second exposure and used my headlamp to illuminate the tree and the rock as my son struck his pose. In post production I adjusted levels and saturation just a tad.”

Penman’s gear: Nikon D7000, AF-S DX Nikkor 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED lens, Manfrotto 055CXPRO3 Carbon Fiber tripod, Arca Swiss Monoball ball head, cable release, headlamp
