“Thunderstorm, Monument Valley” by Jim Shoemaker

Congratulations to Jim Shoemaker whose photo of Monument Valley is the winner of the Spring Showers Assignment!

“This photo of Monument Valley was made in May of 2011. I had been spending the day in the Navajo Tribal Park waiting for sunset when an afternoon thunderstorm rolled in. I love having clouds in my landscape images and, as far as I’m concerned, there’s nothing better than a good thunderstorm to add drama and texture to an image. Clouds have always piqued my interest because they often dwarf the same canyons, mountains, buttes and mesas that dwarf me. They are transient, ever changing and absurdly fickle, and although they seem lighter than air as they float above the landscape, their weight can be mind boggling,” describes Shoemaker.

Equipment: Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L lens, warming polarizer.

Is there an archive for past Assignment winners? Reviewing these photos would help me with composition and developing my own artistic voice. Thank you.

A real wall hanger! You need to put a watermark on it.

Louise, typing “assignment winner” into the search box on the upper right corner should pull up what you’re looking for. :)
