Photo Of The Day 8/1/2012
For August 1st the Photo Of The Day is by Bob Faucher. He made this photograph in Olympic National Park in Washington and he submitted the photograph to the recent Coastlines Assignment. The photograph was actually taken by moonlight and Faucher used a 6-sec exposure on his Canon EOS 5D. You can see Faucher’s full description of the photograph here. Long moonlight exposures can yield a soft, ethereal effect. Here, the long exposure, calm sea state, light fog and overcast clouds all work with the moonlight illumination to create a beautiful, calming look in the photograph.
I select a Photo Of The Day everyday. Images come from the OP Galleries like Your Favorite Places, Assignments and the contest galleries. You can see more of my Photo Of The Day selections on the OP Blog.

Thank you Christopher. It is an honor to have one of my photographs chosen as the Photo of the Day. I am particularly pleased with your comments about how the image feels to you. It is my personal challenge to capture the emotions I experience when making a photo as described by Ian Plant in his essay “5 ways to capture emotion.” Coincidently, I was with Ian on the evening the image you chose was made.

You did a great job with this photograph. Ian’s essay (http://www.outdoorphotographer.com/blog/ian-plant/2012/07/5-ways-to-capture-emotion.html) is one of the best I’ve come across on the topic of conveying emotion in an image. Thanks for the comments, Bob.
