Jeanne Frasse’s photo of Windsor Lake in Colorado wins today’s Photo of The Day. She submitted the photo to the Black & White Special Issue Assignment which is open until May 7th. Windsor Lake is in the Mt Massive Wilderness and it’s a bit of a hike to get there which reduces the number of visitors since the vast majority of people visiting wilderness areas never venture more than 25 yards from a road or parking lot. The photo makes use of black and white’s ability to show detail crisply. In color the cracking grain in the fallen log in the foreground and the stands of pine trees on the mountainside in the background would be more muted and the overall image wouldn’t have the same impact.
Frasse used a Canon EOS 30D with a Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 lens.

I select a Photo Of The Day every day. I choose the images from the various OP galleries including Assignments, Your Favorite Places and all of the OP Contests. Also, for each issue of the magazine I go through the Assignments galleries and choose a few to be featured in The Best Of Assignments in print and I select a weekly winner to be featured on the OP home page. To get your photos into the running all you have to do is submit them.
