Nephi Boren took advantage of last weekend’s rare “Supermoon” to get this photo. Boren was in Zion National Park in Utah and used a Canon EOS Rebel T3i with a 75-300mm lens. The photo was submitted to the Moon Shots Assignment which is open until next Tuesday night. Boren get a spot-on exposure on the moon surface, which is often difficult for photographers. To get the texture of the moon in your moon photos, use a slight variation of the “Sunny 16 Rule. That rule states that a shutter speed of 1/your ISO @ f/16 is the correct exposure on a bright, clear sunny day. On the moon, it’s always a bright, clear sunny day, but because of the distance and all of the Earth’s atmosphere that you’re shooting through you make a one-stop adjustment: 1/your ISO @ f/11. Give this a try to make your photos of the moon come out looking like the moon instead of a featureless bright blob.

I select a Photo Of The Day every day. I choose the images from the various OP galleries including AssignmentsYour Favorite Places and all of the OP Contests. Also, for each issue of the magazine I go through the Assignments galleries and choose a few to be featured in The Best Of Assignments in print and I select a weekly winner to be featured on the OP home page. To get your photos into the running all you have to do is submit them
