Fizzle Sizzle by Aaron Meyers

Aaron Meyers’ photo from Volcanos National Park on The Big Island of Hawaii was submitted to the National Parks Assignment which has been held over until tomorrow 7/16. Photographing the lava flow can be dangerous because of the obvious problems of dealing with molten rock. Less obvious is the issue of noxious fumes which can overwhelm a person in a matter of a few seconds. Keeping a proper distance and heeding weather conditions and the warnings posted at the park is critical. Meyers kept his distance and used his 80-200 telephoto zoom on a Nikon D800 to get this photo. By shooting at a slow shutter speed, he created a nice effect on the crashing waves and the rising steam.

I select a Photo Of The Day every day. I choose the images from the various OP galleries including AssignmentsYour Favorite Places and all of the OP Contests. Also, for each issue of the magazine I go through the Assignments galleries and choose a few to be featured in The Best Of Assignments in print and I select a weekly winner to be featured on the OP home page. To get your photos into the running all you have to do is submit them.

Having been to this very volcano during another irruption, this photo tells the story of the power and the majesty of our earth. The colors, the movement and the depth of this awesome event is captured very well through the photographers eyes. Congratulations.
