Violent Beauty by Roger Hill

Roger and Caryn Hill are storm photography masters and they have been featured in OP several times. In the summer of 2012 their article Storm Watch appeared in the magazine. That article discusses how to photograph storms, and do it safely, and it features a number of their excellent images You can check it out by clicking here. Roger Hill’s photo of an EF4 tornado near Bennington Kansas is today’s Photo of The Day. The photo is called Violent Beauty. Hill describes the scene, “A violent EF4 strength tornado develops just west of Bennington, Kansas on May 28th. This tornado would stay on the ground for one hour. Fortunately it stayed mainly over rural countryside. The structure of the storm with the tornado underneath clearly shows the strong rotation in the system. The colors and depth are incredible!” He used a Canon EOS 5D Mark II and a 24-105mm lens to get this shot.

I select a Photo Of The Day every day. I choose the images from the various OP galleries including AssignmentsYour Favorite Places and all of the OP Contests. Also, for each issue of the magazine I go through the Assignments galleries and choose a few to be featured in The Best Of Assignments in print and I select a weekly winner to be featured on the OP home page. To get your photos into the running all you have to do is submit them.
