Behind The Shot: “Minnesota” by Annie Griffiths – Superior National Forest

STUNNING PHOTOGRAPHS National Geographic. Photo by Annie Griffiths/National Geographic Creative Minnesota Morning sunlight burns through fog over Superior National forest.
Autumn in Minnesota is magical. Everyone loves the annual display of colors as trees and forests change color brilliantly. As a photographer, my favorite part of autumn is the morning mist that happens when the cool night air creates morning fog. I wanted to show this phenomenon while on assignment in northern Minnesota for National …

Fog hanging over a dock in Lake of Bays, Ontario, Canada with fall colors from the changing seasons
The weather of the 2007 fall season was kind of dreadful for Ontario landscape photographers. It rained almost every day through the whole color-change season. On October 8th, I led a group of photography friends to Oxtongue Rapids. At that time, it was one of my secret shooting spots. We had a great time shooting …

fog rolls in over Mount Hood and the forest in Sandy, Oregon
Up at 4 AM, my friend Connie and I planned to arrive well before sunrise to capture the vibrant colors of dawn. Getting lost on our way was not part of our plan and had us running to set up as the pink sky began to fade. Within minutes of our arrival, the color dissipated …

Behind The Shot: “Flowerbow” by Olar Barndõk – Monti Sibillini National Park, Italy

Posted By David Alexander Willis
Meadow with flowers in the valley between the hills was covered with thick layer of fog. There was cold night with minus temperature. After sunrise fog started to disappear and I saw that huge fogbow started to be visible for 10 minutes. Picture is taken in Italy, Sibillini Mountains National Park. 2 stitched images are used because 24 mm lens was too narrow. Canon EOS 5D Mark II + Canon TS-E 24 mm 3,5L II, tripod, ISO 100, f11, 1/200s
I spent my holiday in Italy where I also visited Monti Sibillini National Park. I read from the web that June is a good time to visit as there are lots of flowers, nights are cold and days are warm. This means that mountain valleys are covered with fog and at sunrise you can get …

Behind The Shot: ‘Beachy Head Haar’ by Rhys Davies – Beachy Head, East Sussex, Southern England

Fog rolling over a cliff chalk headland in East Sussex Southern England with tourists for scale
I’d visited Beachy Head in East Sussex without a camera on a couple of occasions in late 2009, however it wasn’t until an unusually warm day in March of 2010 that I was able to return with a plan to take a few images of this spectacular coastline. Most of the day was spent driving …

Redwood Enchantment by Willie Huang
The early morning atmospherics in Redwood National Park create stunning opportunities for a prepared photographer. Willie Huang proved the maxim that luck favors the prepared when he took this photo. He says, “As soon as the sun rose into the sky, the fog began to retreat back into the ocean. By pure luck, most of …
