Nellie Juan Glacier Dwarf Fireweed Sunrise 1

Posted By Jon Cornforth
I photographed this rugged scene while cruising Prince William Sound with my dad in late June. I had scouted Nellie Juan Fjord several days earlier in rainy conditions and observed a few dwarf fireweed blooms high above the tideline on the granite cliffs. In order to get to this location, I woke up well before sunrise,

Arctic Documentary Project – Svalbard, Norway Final Post #5

Posted By Daniel J. Cox
August 10, Danskøya Island 37F This morning is cold. Most definitely the coolest we’ve experienced. Danskøya Island is on the northwest part of the archipelago and is on the edge of better polar bear habitat. The ice is nearly 80 miles offshore, so any bears that are stranded on the Islands of Svalbard migrate towards the

Storm Light, Sainty Mary Lake, Glacier National Park
While on my recent trip to photograph and scout for a future workshop in Glacier National Park, I made it a goal to come away with at least one dramatic image from Saint Mary’s Lake, arguably the most photographed location in the park. The last time I was in Glacier was

Harriman Glacier Dwarf Fireweed Sunrise 1

Posted By Jon Cornforth
During my trip to Alaska last month, I returned to Harriman Fjord in Prince William Sound with ambitions of photographing wildflowers blooming near the tidewater glaciers. I was very lucky, as my timing was perfect and the weather was spectacular. I had seen a few images of this patch of dwarf fireweed from Alaska photographers

Triple Falls, Glacier National Park

Posted By Joseph Rossbach
I am finally back home after a nine-day trip to Glacier National Park followed by a week in Charleston with my family on vacation. The trip to Glacier was productive, but incredibly frustrating. To start with, my first three days were absolutely horrid conditions for nature photography, blue bird blue skies

Arctic Documentary Project – Svalbard, Norway Post #4: Second Trip

August 8, 2011, Cloudy and 43F Tanya and I spent the past three days in Lonyearbyen in a small, very European, apartment, catching up on business matters, writing and a little rest before our next group of guests arrived. The first trip went really well, but every adventure to the field is new,

Heather Island Dwarf Fireweed Sunset 1

Posted By Jon Cornforth
I created this bold image of dwarf fireweed at sunset while visiting Columbia Bay with my small boat Serenity a few weeks ago. This was the second time that I have visited this area this year, after the dramatic and wild nature of the place got under my skin back in May. It

Mt Fairweather Lenticular Aerial 1

Posted By Jon Cornforth
BLECH! That is exactly what I felt like doing during my recent aerial shoot of Mt Fairweather. My pilot gave me ample opportunities to back out of the flight. He told me that even though the weather was clear in Haines that it was going to be a bumpy ride over Glacier

Hovering Over Paradise

Helicopter over summit of Mt. Paget, 9625 feet, South Georgia Island
Yeah, yeah, I know.  In an ideal world, this blog should should be a day-to-day visual diary – sharing new pictures, and reflections on the art and business of photography. But the truth is, I haven’t taken a picture in weeks, busy with conferences, speeches, writing manifestos, and editing older pictures. Yes, professional photography can

Smith Glacier Crevasse 1

Posted By Jon Cornforth
I created this image during my first incredible but brief voyage on Prince William Sound in Alaska last month. I motored my boat from Whittier to the head of College Fjord for a few days and was blown away but the photographic potential. I anchored in Tuition Cove near the Yale
