Getting Vertical

Vertically Challenged • Maximum Quality Formula? • A Little Night Action • Filtering The Sky • Park Photo Permits

I understand how to properly expose horizontal panoramas using a leveled tripod and leveled camera, but how do I get precise vertical panoramas when working from a tripod?

When You Need Three

The airline restrictions on carry-ons (one piece, plus a personal item) make it difficult to fly to a photo destination, especially when traveling with a photo backpack, a long lens and a computer. What do you recommend?

Ready In A Flash

When I’m photographing with a macro flash system, I find that the flash recycle times are too long. The critter has stopped doing what it was doing or left the flower. How do you deal with this problem?

More Duping

I’m still shooting film, though the switch to digital seems inevitable. I’ve been considering purchasing a Nikon Coolscan film scanner to convert slides to digital files and start learning Photoshop. Some of my older slides are Kodachrome; I read recently that Kodachrome doesn’t scan well because of the high silver content, and that Digital ICE doesn’t handle it well. Is the problem with the scan or the ICE process? Can ICE be switched off when scanning?

Best Polarizer Techniques

A Polarizing Topic • Digital Duping Vs. Scanning Standards? • Cheaper Presentations

Most of the time, I leave my polarizer on the lens. I’ve been told that isn’t a good idea. When should I have it on and when should it be stored away?

The Focal Lengths Of Macro

I want a macro lens, but I don’t know which to choose. I see that there are three sizes available from Canon: 50mm, 100mm and 180mm. Which is best?

Blue/Gold-Gold/Blue

A friend told me about a polarizing filter that imparts color to the image. Where would you use this kind of filter? Does it make sense to use a filter like this if you’re photographing in digital and can add color in Photoshop?

ISO & Digital Image Quality

Lowest ISOs • Blowin' In The Wind • Stacking Tele-Extenders • Performance In Cold Environments

I’ve noticed that many of the Nikon cameras, such as the D100, have a starting ISO of 200, while Canon digital cameras start at ISO 100. Is there a difference?

Memory Card Sizes

Is Bigger Better? • Windows Or Mac, One More Time • Full-Frame Dust • Preserving RAW Files

I’ve been shooting with a 10.2-megapixel digital SLR for a few months. I have two 4 GB CompactFlash cards. As I go on safari, I’ve considered getting a couple of 8 GB cards so I won’t have to change and download so often when doing a lot of shooting. Now I’m hearing the 8 GB cards aren’t as good. If this is a fact, what’s the problem?
