How to Start a Camera Collection

camera collectionAll this talk about new “vintage” cameras (i.e. the new Olympus “Digital Pen”) has me in the mood to shoot with the classics. I’ve never had a particularly robust collection of classic cameras, but I’ve always been keen to pick up affordable box cameras, Polaroids and really anything else that either takes great pictures or makes for a unique snapshot (pardon the pun) of a time in photographic history. Ideally, a camera collection fulfills both needs—it’s neat to look at and it takes great pictures. But sometimes either will suffice. If you’ve ever wanted to start your own camera collection, I advise simply keeping your eyes open at flea markets and yard sales. If you’d like to develop a bit more of a deliberate agenda, do a little online research. The Online Photographer has a nice list of starter collector cameras, and the comments that follow the story show just how passionate photographers can be about their favorite all-time cameras. Photographer Matt Denton has also uploaded a gallery of his camera collection, as well as information about his favorites. Mischa Koning’s web site not only tells the story of how he started his camera collection, but it catalogs some of his all-time favorites.
