Icy Prospects

In reviewing the work of Finnish photographer Jorma Puranen, photo blog curator Jorg Colberg points out that it’s not really a surprise that a Scandinavian landscape photographer may turn his camera to images of snow and ice. With his new book Icy Prospects, though, Puranen has provided his share of surprises. He’s done much more than simply photograph the frozen landscape of the arctic, he has created very painterly, somewhat abstract images of these rich, colorful landscapes. It might drive some purists crazy, but the images offer a beautiful, unique and somewhat challenging look at these icy lands. No matter which side of the aesthetic preference you fall (naturalist or lyricist), it’s important to be challenged creatively and aesthetically once in a while. It never hurts to look outside your comfort zone—particularly when the work is so inviting.
