Nikon’s Big Payout

Nikon’s hosting a contest. That’s big news, but for more than the usual reasons: this time it’s not a photography contest. Boy, how the times they are a changing. Nikon’s contest is for video—namely, short films. And you can win, get this, $100,000. That’s serious prize money. But first you’ll have to shot, edit and submit your short film, and get it judged by photographer Chase Jarvis, Rainn Wilson (Dwight, from NBC’s The Office, and amateur filmmaker) and someone named iJustine, who I just learned is an Internet celebrity. She’s a “lifecaster,” someone who has documented her whole life and broadcast it online. That’s pertinent, really, because Nikon’s film contest is called Your Day, and it challenges you to make a short film of one day in your life. Comedy, drama, documentary or anything else you can envision. Learn more and read the rules online at Chase’s blog or Nikon’s web site. Lest you think “I can’t enter since I don’t shoot Nikon,” wait just one second: the contest is open to users of any camera. Nice sportsmanship, Nikon. So get to shooting, Mr. Spielberg. And get used to the idea of names like Nikon and Canon becoming more commonly associated with movies and TV. (Want one more example of this convergence? Here’s one: the intro video clips for this season of NBC’s Saturday Night Live were filmed with a Canon EOS 5D Mark II. The future has officially arrived.)
