Canon's long-anticipated successor to the trend-setting EOS 5D Mark II DSLR delivers on many requests regarding that popular camera and adds several features developed for the flagship EOS-1D X. The result is a full-frame DSLR with a blend of still and HD video performance. We expect the EOS 5D Mark III to be an excellent landscape, wildlife, sports-action and travel camera.
The new 5D Mark III has been built to be somewhat more durable than the EOS 5D Mark II, and it's better sealed against weather. The sensor-cleaning system also has been improved. The shutter carries a 150,000-cycle rating.
Dual Memory Options
There are slots for CompactFlash and SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards, and you can record the same data to both cards, record different file sizes on separate cards or automatically switch to the second card when one is filled.
Introduced in the flagship pro EOS-1D X (which has two of them), the 5D Mark III's DIGIC 5+ processor is 17 times more powerful than the DIGIC 4. The DIGIC 5+ makes it possible for the camera to implement the new noise-reduction algorithms, on-the-fly chromatic aberration correction and an improved video codec.
ISOs To 102,400
The new sensor and DIGIC 5+ processor make possible a normal ISO range of 100-25,600, expandable to 50-102,400, a big improvement over the 5D Mark II and approaching the performance of the flagship EOS-1D X. You can shoot landscapes at dawn and dusk, and get those crepuscular wildlife moments.
New 22.3 MP CMOS Sensor
The 5D Mark III's new 22.3-megapixel Canon full-frame CMOS sensor provides more pixels than any other Canon DSLR, yet offers a good balance among resolution, high-ISO performance and shooting speed. Gapless microlenses, new photodiode structure and improved on-chip noise reduction produce higher sensitivity and lower noise levels for RAW, JPEG and HD video compared to the 5D Mark II.
