Where: From Granite Falls, drive east on the Mountain Loop Highway approximately 25 miles to Forest Service Road 4060 (Coal Lake Road) on the north (left) side of the road. FS 4060 is a gravel and dirt road that winds alongside the mountain several times, affording spectacular views of the valley below. Follow FS 4060 for 4.3 miles to the parking area for Coal Lake on the left.
Best Time(s): While beautiful all year, the plentiful berry bushes lining the hills surrounding the lake provide ample fall color. As the lake is in a bowl, the area is lit for only a limited time during the middle of the day.
What’s There: Coal Lake sits nestled in a bowl created by steep hills on three sides of the lake in the Cascade Mountains of northwestern Washington. The hills are covered with evergreens and berry bushes. During fall, the berry bushes turn to beautiful reds, oranges and yellows and contrast the cold, clear water of the lake.
Essential Gear: Bring a polarizer to bring out the colors and cut through the reflections in the water for a view of the rocks below the surface. A wide-angle lens will help capture the full extent of this long lake and a portion of the surrounding slopes. While the west side of the lake is accessible on foot, there’s no trail around the lake. Views from other parts of the lake are best captured by using a small paddleboat, kayak or canoe.
