Location #6
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Michigan
Photographer: Jeff Rabidoux
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT, Canon EF 28-135mm IS lens, Sunpak Platinum Plus 5800D tripod
Where: The nearest road or highway is the M-22, and the nearest town is Glen Arbor. Take U.S. 31 to Traverse City, and then head west on the M-72 to the town of Empire.
Best Time(s): October when the dunes have returned to their natural state. Footprints are smoothed over by the constant winds coming off the lake, and drifts of sand reveal nature’s beautiful textures. With the sun setting over the lake, I find that the evening is the best time to capture the area. The evening light brings out shadows and textures, which help to provide depth within the images.
What’s There: There are numerous inland lakes and rivers that provide ideal landscape scenes. A kayak down the Crystal River can provide a full day of photography as it moves gently through hardwood forests and marshlands.
Essential Gear: It’s accessible all year, so pack appropriate clothing for the season. The dune area itself is a harsh environment for your camera. The sugar sand will find its way to your image sensor given the opportunity, so you may want to cover your camera body and make minimal lens changes, especially on breezy days. I shoot mainly with my 28-135mm IS lens because it provides the opportunity for both macro and landscape photographs. The image stabilizer also provides some ability to capture shots even in low-light situations. Longer telephoto lenses, such as 100-300mm, would also be helpful when capturing wildlife.
