- Description: Shooting sand dunes can be mesmerizing. The shapes and shadows play tricks on your mind. When I saw this composition, I literally fell to my knees... well, okay, partly from exhaustion, but also from the amazing view that was before my eyes! The good thing about being so exhausted and falling to my knees was that I had my tripod set up so that it was damn comfortable shooting at that height. The sand cushions the knees that way.
What appears to be a black hole here is actually an indentation in the west side of the dune from the wind patterns. The sun is rising from the east, thus rendering that area void of light. The shapes and smoothness in the sand, combined with the low angle of the sun on that morning just floored me. On my way down, I took a few breaks to drink and snack... and at one point, I found a windless spot and just laid down, took in the quietness and enjoyed the sunshine on my face. Sometimes, those are the best moments in photography.
