Cheap rain cover for lens & camera

Postby photosal » Thu Jun 18, 2009 10:26 am

I am new to OP and was reading thru this section. I noticed somone asking about a rain cover for a camera and lens.

I made one for my self. I found an old wind braker without lineing in my closet, took off a sleeve at the shoulder. The sleeve has elastic at one end and is wide cut at the other. I purchased a can of water repelant and really coated it good inside and out.

All you do is slide the sleeve ( wide end first) over the lens ,pullback it back to the camera. This end covers the camera nicely, then pull the elastic end over the lens onto the lens shade. If it starts to rain hard I just pull the elastic end over the lens to cover the glass, tuck the back end around the camera. If you want to take a shot juust reverse. I use it on my 50/500 Sigma and right down thru all the other lenses in my bag . The other nice thing is you can roll it up slip a rubber band on it and stores in small space

Good info Photosal....You can also buy the OP/TECH rain sleeve as a two pack for $7. I keep a few of them in each camera bag and as long as you're careful with drying them out and folding them back up, they can be used multiple times

If you happen to have some spare cash lying around, you can move up to the ThinkTank Hydrophobia. This is the crem-da-la-crem of rain covers and the one you see along the sidelines of any pro sports event. This is the bad boy I'm saving up for, but till then, I'll use the $7 rain covers

Hey Phil, have you ever tried that model out?

I'd be interested in trying it, but it looks like its only offered in Europe?

Know of any American suppliers?

It's not cheap, but check out the ThinkTank Hydrophobia for the 70-200 if you're looking for a really slick rain cover
