aspect ratio

What does aspect ratio mean, ive learned about almost every thing else but i cant figure out what ASPECT RATIO means...

could anyone help?

It has to do with how many rows and columns of pixels are displayed on a screen or captured by a sensor. For example traditional TV has a ratio of 4:3 (for every 4 pixels horizontally there are 3 vertically), Widescreen format is a 16:9 (on computer screens it's actually 16:10). Digital Cameras come with sensors that capture either 4:3 or 3:2 (Canon for example). An image of 8X10 is a 4:3, on 3:2 that becomes a 8X12 (wider).

thanks, i was thinking that it had to do with the glass in the lens lol! idk how i thought that..

:shock: my camera is messed... I have the option for 16:9...point and shoots...*sigh*

P&S cameras have a 4:3 aspect ratio, they have programmable modes that just crop for you so to obtain a different ratio, but it's not really a sensor ratio, just a crop. I rather do it myself on PS.
