FESTIVAL TELUK JAILOLO 2010 ::

Gilolo, is a name of a beautiful district in West Halmahera Regency, North Maluku province. West Halmahera Regency was an expanded region from North Maluku Regency, since 2003.



Due to promote the beauty of West Halmahera with its unique art and culture, original tribe Sahu, and wonderful underwater world. It is part of Indonesian Coral Triangle which is center of beautiful various marine species and corals, local government is now organizing the second “Festival Teluk Jailolo 2010 / FTJ 2010” - Gilolo Bay Festival, 2010.



The FTJ 2010 's theme is " COLOURFUL SEA OF GILOLO", the second festival which is more interesting than the previous one. This festival involves the whole community as its concept which is based on the spirit to develop the area hand in hand. The community are participated in organizing and running the events. The cultural ethnicity of this area is performed with a new theaterical concept, which is named Theatre on the Sea.



Theatre on the sea is the master piece of this festival, and it has never been performed before neither in Indonesia nor in other parts of the world. The performance itself will show several fisherman's boat which are shaped into particular configurations. This configuration will be like "floating" stage with marine biota as a background setting which can move similar to its origin. For the fisherman's boat transformation to the marine biota, we will use local natural resources as well as human resources. This synergy shows the authenticity of this festival, which belongs to West Halmahera, in particular and Indonesia, in general.



The traditional art of West halmahera is also becomes part of this Theatre on the sea festival, such as yanger music, tataruba instrument; made from bamboo, manuru and other traditional dances such as Legu Salai, Sara dabi-dabi. The best part is Horom Sasadu, the big feast which is held after the harvesting. This art and culture festival is performed by West Halmahera farmers, and will be held in May 29, started from 15.00 WIT (local time).



Therefore, there will be trainings for Teluk Jailolo community with the respect of arts performance which has acting class in it, stage decoration, transformation from the fisherman's boat into marine biota, wardrobe and costume. These trainings are aimed to make this festival to be such a professional erformance so that enable to attract domestic as well as overseas tourists.



These trainings are used as a trigger to raise the spirit and creativity of West Halmahera community, so that they can develop themselves in the future in regards to their neighborhood, home town and their country . They are challenging activities and totally different from trainings which they have perceived before that only discuss about agricultural, farming, mining and fishery. These art trainings bring different atmosphere to the community even though they have had strong artistry.

The trainings will be conducted for about two months, and ended with their performance at the Theatre on the Sea, the higlighted event of Festival Teluk Jailolo 2010. There will be many art and culture performances of Halmahera Barat for about a week before highlighted Theater on the Sea, and they will be spread through the area.



There will be many divers and photographers from all over Indonesia and hundreds of them coming from North Maluku. These photographers will start hunting for their best shoot starts from May 24, 2010, while the divers will participate at the Fun Diving event on May 27 and 28, 2010. The great part of this diving event is the attendance of Indonesian Diving Icon; Nadine Chandrawinata, with the purpose to introduce the new preeminent diving spot in eastern part of Indonesia which is situated in triangle coral area.



The nature's exquisite and the culture's uniqueness has become the greatest cultural potential for those who keen in photography which has quite a big number in Indonesia. Therefore, the committee is also held Photographer Hunting event in this festival. Many of photographers are interested to come to this place and explore more after they saw the beauty of the nature from the photographs which are posted in "Gorgeous Gilolo" hand book.



Local goverment takes the concept of adventure tourism to give particular sensation to the visitors. There are homestays that have been prepared which are placed in community houses. Thus, the community can actively involve in this festival and raise their awareness of their culture by applying “Sapta Pesona”, the government program to encourage people to participate in tourism. The hospitality of peole at Teluk Jailolo cannot be argued anymore since they have received knowledge of how to welcome visitors to their area. Indeed, the situation and the environment at Teluk Jailolo are ready to have this big event with open arms.



Teluk Jailolo is accessible for outsider, since it only takes three hours flight from Jakarta to Ternate, or with alternative flight via Makassar or Manado to reach Ternate. Then, the travel will be continued from Dufa-Dufa Harbour in Ternate to Teluk Jailolo by taking 40 minutes speed boat.
