June Issue Photo Question

Does anyone other than me see a problem with the top photo on page 42 of the June issue of the magazine? I know that light and shadow can be very confusing, but I think that this photo is a complex composite of multiple photos taken at different times of day. The light and shadows appear to be coming from several directions in the photo. I would have no problem with this except that the article claims that the photos are not manipulated other than being "stiched" together.

I don't see that
