I live in wisconsin and would like to know what to do when a person comes inside from taking pictures in the middle of winter so his camera and lens drys out with damage.

If that is an issue for you put the gear in a very large zip lock bag, close it up and the moisture will adhere to the bag. Remove the gear carefully and thats it.
