My "First" shots of the Moon

Postby Photography~girl~ » Sun Nov 01, 2009 5:44 pm

Technically speaking, my VERY first pictures of the moon was a TINY sliver in the sky. not much of a moon shot. But tonight. AHhh, tonight. My bro comes in from outside, "Alex, have you seen the moon?" He explains its big and cool. Well i decided to get off my lazy bottom, and go shoot the thing. I put on the 4.6 70-300mm lens I'm barrowing from my mentors, grabed my tri-pod and went out with hardly any idea of what i was going to do.
I remember reading(in my lighting book, and on here) that you have to "under expose" the moon, because the camera usually reads the blackness of the sky. My first shot was at like 1/20th of a sec, thinking i should have a longer exposer. It was just a WHITE dot. Hm. So i REALLY under exposed it. Shot at ISO 100, Aperture 10(no idea how /small/ my aperture should've been...lol), and around 1/100 of a sec. I also did faster then that. Just getting different brightnesses. But i was still surprised at how fast i could shoot! hahaha.
Either way, i am SO HAPPY with the shots(not to mention surprised.) I will still gladly take some C&C though. :)

Cool! I did some new ones tonight, using my new 70-300, and they look just like yours. It's the Harvest Moon, and the closest it comes to Earth each year.
I live in my own little world. It's OK, everyone here knows me.

wow....my moon picture looks the same too..... I just wish one day i can take a picture of the moon when it is rising in the evening and it looks like a BIG ball on the horizon when it has that orange glow to it. I really want to go by the farmers house where I live and take a picture of the moon rising next to his farmhouse and barn...it would be a cool picture....now if I can only get the moon work with me :D
