I picked up a 500D diopter for my 100mm macro lens and it really paid off! I get better bokeh and a little more working distance. Here are a few shots from my first outing.

All Canon gear: For closeups; Xti in aperture priority (F5.6, ISO 200) + 100mm macro lens + 500D diopter. For macros: Manual mode F8, 1/200, ISO 200. MR-14EX set to a 4:1 ratio and -1/3 FEC. Magnifications range from about 1/3 to 1.375x life size.

I've been hearing alot of things about that 500D attatchment. Is it just a Canon brand close-up filter? They never seem to call it a filter. These are all beautiful shots, nice work.

It's a filter, but it has two lens elements to correct for chromatic aberration.

Thanks for the props!

great shots!

Canon also makes a 250d close-up lens, which is 4 diopters (500d is two diopters) and might be useful to you. I use a sony branded 3.3 diopter lens for macros, I love it. In fact, it's the best 60$ I ever spent.

I use the word "lens" intentionally - these lenses bend light, they do not filter it. Just because they screw onto the front of the main lens does not make them filters.

I was concerned that the working distance of the 250D would be too short, but I still seem to have to get pretty close to the critters anyway :)
