Skip the text if you're not interested in my rambling about the technique. After the girls have been feeding on corn syrup for a while (about an hour) they learn to look for it on the pumpkin flowers. So I took a piece of one of the flowers, put it on a pumpkin leaf in a convenient spot, and put some corn syrup on it. With the flower petal at the edge of the leaf it was easier to get the low angles that I wanted for these 4x @ F11 images. Single frames (no stacking). Lots of depth due to the angle that I'm holding the camera (placing the area of acceptable focus as flat against the subject as possible). Lots of deleted frames due to the antenna -about a 4% keeper rate over two days of shooting (I'll post more frames this winter when the critters are gone).

Thanks Mitchell and Pat :)

I was happy to get those compositions out of my head and into the camera.

Excellent work, the focused part of the images is super sharp. I finally got to play with an MPE-65 for a morning and now I know how difficult using that lens is.

Thanks Luca :)

Takes a little practice but I'd rather have the MPE-65mm than a standard macro lens and extension tubes...

Pat has told me so much about your photography and how you just do it as a hobby. All I can say when I see your work is WOW! It is ashame that you don't get it printed in a mag or something for all to see. Your photos are incredible!

Thanks Cindy :)

Range Magazine recently published four of my images along with an article that I co-wrote with Tom Stack (Tom manages my portfolio). McGraw-Hill has downloaded over 40 of my photos and they are stating to license them for a middle school science text book that's due out in 2012, so things are starting to pick up ;)

Congradulations! I never had science books with cool pictures in them, you will make the kids want to be photographers! Good for you.

It would be cool to get the next generation hooked on macro :)

First off, love these pics. I love insect macro, and this tops any images I have ever seen! And 2nd, I was actually just looking at that mpe 65 today on bh. What makes it different from, say, my canon 50mm macro lens? I know it's full-time manual, but what else?
