Rodeo Shot

Postby NWGA_dispatcher » Mon Jul 21, 2008 7:48 am

I know I ain't posted around here in quite a while. Things have been hectic and the few times I've gotten out to shoot has just not turned out well. I went to a local rodeo this weekend, and just took my camera as an after thought. I didn't plan on doing much more than shots of family and friends, but I managed to get 1 good shot of the action. I was pleasantly surprised since my gear isn't designed for these circumstances. It was almost sunset and I was all the way at the other end of the arena.

Nice catch, considering the limits of your camera. I'm hoping to be able to go to Cheyenne for Frontier Days. Even with my DSLR and 70-200 F/4 it's hard to get goot shots here because our rodeo is at 8pm.

If that shot was just a tad more sharp, I bet you could have sold it to the rider for big bucks!!

Nice capture though considering the limitations on you with your gear

Thanks for the compliments. I wish I could say I meant to do it but that would be a lie. My s5000 has so much shutter lag I just got to try and watch the action and click it just before I think something good will happen and hope for the best. So it was alot of luck. But I guess this camera is still good enough to learn with. I had planned on upgrading in August to a real DSLR but we just found out we are expecting our 1st youngin, so thats out the window for the foreseeable future.

NWGA - we have a rodeo come through here once a year and I've yet to get a decent shot.
In the caveman days of film, I burned a lot and got nothing - none as good as yours.
Night rodeo under the lights with a 4.0-5.6 lens just doesn't get it.
Under better light I've gotten some good action shots of soccer, whitewater canoeing, boarding, even with shutter lag on my old Canon G-3.
Part is anticipation, part is luck, part is perserverence, part is knowing the capabilities and limits of your equipment and working within them, or stretching them where possible.
Keep shooting!
I came; I saw; I shot; I shared.
