Wide angle focusing

Postby Terry B. » Mon Nov 24, 2008 6:58 pm

When shooting wide angle scapes, with a prominant foreground focal point, are you manually focusing on that point or using a southernly positioned auto focus point , as on the Canon body? What's most common to "get it all"?

Terry,

Here's a link to a DOF calculator that will help you determine how far past your close subject you can focus. The actual distance you can focus beyond your close subject and still have it in focus depends on a lot of variables. Hope this helps.

Howdy Terry,
Here's my 2 cents: With a wide angle, dof is usually fine at f8 with a 18 to 28mm lens with a wider lens like a 10 to 18 you can almost always get away with f5.6 or wider if you can afford that fish-eye glass. Even at an iso of 100. I suggest you practice and remember, it's better than carrying around a chart that you always have to refer too! The more you stop down and use the tripod the more in focus "all will be"!

Suggest you use a tripod (always if practical) Apature priority at f/11+ focus on the subject -- if you can't reach out and touch it, you're too far away! If the lens is w-i-d-e enough the mountains in the background will still be tack sharp.
