Does anyone know of any good online photography classes? I noticed a place called betterphoto.com which is advertised in the magazine, but was wondering if it's any good.

Yes - Betterphoto courses are good. I'm not sure that they're GREAT, but good. You get a lesson each week with what would amount to 5 or 6 pages of text and some example photos. You also get an assignment. When you turn in your photos from the assignment, you will be critiqued on the results.

My complaint was that the few pages of lesson are less than what you read in an ordinary instruction book. You're really paying for the personalized critique, and your own comparison of your work to your classmates. It's good also in forcing you to go out and shoot something. Although somewhat costly, I will probably take more of them.

Another really good place for online classes is Apogee (www.apogee.com)
It is a site devoted to learning, with idea articles, reviews, and even a number of online classes that you interact with instructors and other students.

HP has classes online and they are free, check them out I have taken several they're great. They have other classes not related to photography that are free also. You get a certificate when you complete the lessons and you do have to participate and take test.
Do you see what I see???

Hi Kim,

I took a course at BetterPhoto with Lewis Kemper and was very happy with it; of course how much you get also depends on how much you put in it. It's very useful to have your work critiqued by pros (all photographers in BP are accomplished professionals) and follow a certain direction in your work.

In a couple of days I'll start my second course, Successful Publication Photography, with Rob Sheppard (editor of Outdoor Photographer magazine).
Send me a private message for more information.

The Compelling Image [www.thecompellingimage.com] has a great lineup of online-interactive courses. They're run as a "virtual classroom" experience by working professionals based around the world. I highly recommend checking them out.

The first thing I did when I bought my first SLR in 06 was buy the book Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. The book taught me about aperture, shutter speed and ISO, how to use these adjustments in the field, and I've enjoyed learning by trial and error, achieving both pleasing images and failures. I like to study my shots afterwards on my monitor, figure out how to make improvements, and someday I hope to capture a shot that looks perfect. I've been looking into taking a local community college photography course, this topic has me interested in the possibilities of an on-line course, and learning without shooting with a crowd sounds more like my style. Thanks for the links to the photography classes!

Cheers,
Graham

Hi all - I was reading through and wanted to get an update from the field here about online course recommendations since I didn't see any posts for awhile. I checked out betterphoto.com and it looks intriguing but kind of got nervous about the price and what you truly get from an online course. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!

Yes, but... what kind of course: understanding light, learning how to use a particular camera, composition, Photoshop, Lightroom, etc. ?
