Hey Canonites...software question

Postby Walczak Photo » Wed Apr 23, 2008 7:59 am

Hey Folks,
Ok...I have a new annoying little problem. I recently added a Belkin USB 2.0 card to my PC after discovering that my built in USB ports were only 1.0. Now I figured as long as I was "upgrading things", I went onto Canon's website and downloaded the latest drivers and such for my Rebel XT as well. I had done this on my lap top a few weeks ago and I really like the new "EOS Utility" vs the old downloader that came with the camera.

Now on the laptop (and IBM Thinkpad R31 1 ghz Pentium III), everything is working fine and dandy. On the PC here though, while it is run -MUCH- faster, every now and then I get an error that says "Camera was disconnected during transfer...all files may not have downloaded"...and no, I haven't disconnected the cable. I turn the camera off, turn it on again and the download starts again. This isn't happening consistently...sometimes it makes it thru a whole download of roughly 140 images and sometimes I have to restart it once or twice to get all the images off the camera. Obviously it never did this with the USB 1.0 ports and the old software...but I'm not sure if the problem is the new ports or the software.

Anyone run into this, any thoughts on what may be causing this and/or more specifically any idea how to fix it?

As always, thanks in advance!
Peace,
Jim

Jim,

Did you upgrade your cable? The cables are supposed to be the same for either 1.0 or 2.0 but some of the old cheaper 1.0 cables can't maintain the high speed of 2.

Hey Bob,
Well...I didn't "replace" the cable(s) specifically, but they are newer cables so I was assuming they're 2.0...but yea...you could be right there. Now that you mention it, I'm not sure the cable package actually said "2.0"...hmmmm. I'll try and swap out cables next time I have some shots to dl (probably tomorrow night) and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks...good suggestion!
Jim

Hey Guys,
While I haven't done any "big" downloads yet, I've done a few smaller ones and it looks like Bob was right...I think it was the cable (thanks Bob!). I've been getting these USB cables for really cheap ($1 a piece) and they had been working really well for most of my other stuff (since my old ports were 1.0), but it never occurred to me that they weren't actually 2.0 cables...I didn't even realize there was a difference with the cables. I put the cable that came with the camera back on and it seems to be working perfectly (which also explains why it was working with the laptop since that's the cable I had on the laptop).

Ya'd think being a former hardware tech, I'd know to check dumb crap like that by now! LOL!!! Anyways, we'll know for sure next time I fill a memory card, but for now that looks like what the problem was.

Again thanks guy!
Peace,
Jim
